Editor’s Note

Aitkin County has long held a reputation as one of the best counties in Minnesota for the enjoyment of nature. A reputation that is well deserved. The diverse habitats found within its borders insure an equally diverse collection of insects, plants, animals and birds. It is birders, perhaps, more than most who hold the county in such high esteem. Of the 316 species of birds found in Aitkin County, several are rare or more difficult to find elsewhere. These specialty birds, along with tremendous areas to witness the spectacle of migrating birds, are why Aitkin is high on the list of destinations for birders from all across the country. Nature, the environment and enjoyment of the outdoors have always been important to the residents of Aitkin County. It’s easy to understand why. With 365 lakes, over 54% of the county either public land or surface water and only a single traffic light, Aitkin County is the ideal destination for anyone wishing to enjoy the outdoors. Nature watching enthusiasts have an abundance of locations to explore. Through this book, we are going to share some of our favorites with you. Welcome to Aitkin County and good birding!
