Nearest Town: Aitkin
The mile-long, narrow Moulton Lake Forest Road goes through a mixture of deciduous woods full of bird life. On the east side of the roadway, the stream flows into the lake, complete with beaver dam and lodge that attracts a lot of bird and animal life. The road ends at the Moulton Lake public access parking area. At the lake, there are several large White Pines where Pine Warblers nest.
This is a wonderful road with a good variety of birds. There are several warbler species present during the summer, including Northern Parula, Black-throated Green, Canada, Mourning and Golden-winged Warblers, Ovenbird, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Nashville Warbler and Northern Waterthrush. Birds of interest found along the road include Scarlet Tanager, Red-shouldered Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Barred Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Alder Flycatcher, Least Flycatcher, Winter Wren, Yellow-throated Vireo, Indigo Bunting, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Hermit Thrush and American Woodcock. On the lake, you may see Common Loon, Bald Eagle, Belted Kingfisher, Hooded Merganser, Wood Duck and Great Blue Heron. In addition, Northern Saw-Whet Owls occasionally call near the lake.
Common mammals to see include Red Fox and White-tailed Deer along the road, along with American Beaver, Mink and River Otter near the beaver dam and lodge.
Directions: From Aitkin, north on US Highway 169 for approximately 15 miles to County Road 3, then west on County Road 3 for approximately 9.5 miles. The Forest Road, which is also the public access road to the lake, is marked on the south side of the road.
