Aitkin County Naturally

Bird Clubs

Aitkin County doesn’t have an active bird club at this time. The Bee-Nay-She Council bird club, based in neighboring Crow Wing County, has many Aitkin County members and features annual field trips to some of the better birding areas of Aitkin County.

Purple Finch
Minnesota’s state bird club, the Minnesota Ornithologists’ Union (MOU), is composed of people with an interest in Minnesota birds. They publish an excellent quarterly journal, The Loon, and a bi-monthly newsletter, Minnesota Birding. Their Web site is full of material dedicated to the birds of Minnesota. You will find photos of recently seen birds, transcripts of the state’s three rare bird alerts, transcripts from the MOU’s list service (including directions on how to subscribe), a place where you can record your Minnesota bird sightings and a great deal more. It is the single, greatest reference for the birds of Minnesota. It should become familiar to anyone with an interest in the state’s birdlife.
Guides and Birding Tours

Northeastern Minnesota has several professional birding guides who are available to guide in NE Minnesota and Aitkin County. All are familiar with Aitkin County, where the birds are and how to best show them to others.

Hiring a local professional guide has several benefits for the visiting birder, particularly those with limited time or a specific list of wanted birds. These guides know the best areas, times and methods to see your target species. They know the back roads and short cuts saving visiting birders time, energy and gas. They are used to driving on snow and ice (a delicate operation under the best of conditions let alone the narrow little maintained back roads). They are some of the most active birders in the state. Accordingly, they have the latest bird news and sightings (many of them are their own!). They know many lesser-known but important sites not mentioned in the popular bird finding guides.

While not all-inclusive, this list includes guides who have been guiding birders for more than ten years, are familiar with the birds and roads of Aitkin County and continue to bird the county on a regular basis.
