pull-offs where you can scan the lake in this mostly residential area, but watch for traffic, especially on weekends and during the summer months. There are a few old breakwater rock piles in the first couple of miles. These are popular roosting sites for shorebirds, gulls and terns and Arctic Tern has been found. Check th Shah-bush-kung Bay Public Access. There is a large parking area and views of the lake.
17. Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe’s Grand Casino, Indian Museum and restored trading post.
18. Vinland (Vineland) Bay. Another good area for waterfowl, cormorants, coots, mergansers and terns, particularly as the ice goes out in the spring.
19. (A) Izatys Sioux Village Historic Monument. On the lakeside of State Highway 169, you can follow the roadway beyond the monument to a cemetery and hike the trail to the lake. Trees and open grasslands along the trail to the lake are a magnet for migrants in the spring and fall. Entrance to Mille Lacs – Kathio State Park (B, see also page 81) is west of US Highway 169 at County Road 26.
20. County Road 35 south of the bridge, with limited parking at the Kathio State Park trail on the north corner, hike out along the trail to look for passerines in the trees and to view the lake from the mouth of the creek (A). Look for shorebirds along the sandy beach on this corner. Follow County Road 35 for several miles along the lake, with lake views, trees for passerines, feeders and many Purple Martin houses. Eddy’s resort (B) has food and lodging and lake views.
21. US Highway 169 east to State Highway 27 following the south shore of the lake has limited views of the lake.
22. Cove Bay Public Access. View the lake and bay, with a marshy wetland near the parking lot and a row of evergreens for variety. Look for Sora, American Coot, Mallard, warblers, Gray Catbird, crossbills, nuthatches, Brown Creeper and Blue Jay near the parking area. The trail on the opposite side of State Highway 27 has woods to the east and fish hatchery ponds to the west. Both deserve checking during migration.
23. 92nd Avenue to the BayView Bar and Grill with a public access. Jerry’s Landing at Eyota Way and 92nd Ave has lake views.
24. Izaty’s Resort at the end of 92nd Ave has limited lake views, food, lodging, golf and more. Follow County Road 152 back to State Highway 27.
25. County Road 142 has a walkway path to the lake with limited parking.
26. Wahkon – full services are available in town. Scan the lake from Veteran’s Park and Picnic Area and boat landing on Wahkon Bay along 6th Avenue.
27. County Road 155 – Hazelglade (private) – has limited lake views.
